### Four fuels, and they fail in different places

An electric range is elements and relays. A gas range is igniters, valves and a spark module. An induction top is a set of coils and their electronics, which fail as an area of the surface rather than as a burner. Dual fuel is both, and the make and model decide which half we bring parts for.

### Reading the code table honestly

GE’s own page says it cannot list every code for every model past and present, and the codes it does list repeat themselves: several point at the keypanel, two at the oven sensor, two at the control. A page that turns twenty codes into twenty different repairs is padding. What the code narrows down is the circuit, and the measurement on site is what names the part.

### Self-clean deserves its own warning

The cycle runs the cavity far hotter than cooking ever does, and it is the most common moment for an ageing element, sensor or lock to give up. If a range is going to fail this year, self-clean is when. On an older appliance before a holiday, that is worth knowing.

### The oven will not heat but the burners on top work.

That is the most useful sentence a customer can say, because it separates the cooktop circuit from the oven one immediately. On an electric range it is usually the bake element, the oven sensor or the control relay; GE's own article walks the same path. On a gas range it is the igniter far more often than the valve — an igniter that glows but no longer draws enough current will never open the gas.

### There is an F code on the display. What do they mean?

GE publishes the table, and the honest summary is that it is shorter than it looks: F0, F1, F6 and F7 all point at the keypanel; F3 and F4 are both the oven sensor; F5 and F8 are the electronic control; F9 and FC are the door lock circuit. So four codes are one conversation and not four. Tell us the code and the model and we can usually name the part before the visit.

### The door locked itself after self-clean and will not open.

GE documents this one specifically, and the first answer is patience: the lock will not release until the oven is below a set temperature, which can take well over an hour after the cycle ends. If it is cool and still locked, or LOC DOOR is flashing without a clean cycle having run, that is the lock motor or its switch — an ordinary repair.

### It says Bad Line.

That one is not a repair. GE's table says it plainly: power is applied but the appliance has been wired incorrectly. It needs an electrician or the installer who connected it, and the range will work normally once the wiring is right.
