# GE refrigerator error code dE

### What dE means, in the maker’s own words

The defrost system has not operated properly in the last 24 hours. Unlike its capitalized twin this is a repair: the circuit that keeps the evaporator clear has stopped doing it, and in this climate ice builds where the air has to pass within days.

### Where this code actually appears

On the control panel, and usually with a sound. GE describes their refrigerator codes as flashing green on the display and typically accompanied by a beeping, and the range, microwave and dishwasher tables all describe codes you can read from the front of the appliance. That is the opposite of some makes, where the number is written into a hidden log and never shown — here, if something is wrong, the appliance generally tells you. Photograph what it says before cutting the power, because a reset erases it and the code is most of the diagnosis.

### Which machines this one applies to

Refrigerators with electronic dispenser controls. GE says plainly on their own range and oven table that they cannot list every code for every model past and present, so a code missing from their table is not proof that your appliance cannot raise it — and a code in it is not proof that yours can. The model number settles it.

### What to do about it

- Check the case first. dE in lower case is the defrost system; DE in capitals is demo mode, which is a setting rather than a problem.
- Note whether the freezer is still cold while the fresh food side is warming. That is the defrost signature and it is worth telling us on the phone.
- A manual defrost — the appliance emptied and switched off for a day — will restore cooling for a few days. That confirms the diagnosis rather than fixing it.
- The circuit is heater, thermostat and control, and it is tested as a whole: replacing a heater on a failed thermostat fails again inside a fortnight.

### Where this goes next

The job this usually becomes is [defrost system repair](/services/defrost-system-repair/), and every one of those pages carries a starting figure and the reasons that move it. If it turns out to be nothing — and on this make a real share of these are modes rather than problems — the visit ends there and you pay the diagnostic and nothing else, or call [(305) 306-2503](tel:+13053062503) and describe what the display is doing before booking anything.
