# GE diagnostic visit

What this involves

What the appliance reports, read rather than guessed

The causes outside the appliance ruled out first

Credited toward the repair

The model and serial, and what it has been doing

The serial carries GE's two-letter date code, so the age of the machine is known before we arrive. That decides what is worth spending as much as the symptom does.

Any code or pattern on the display, photographed

GE's ranges and microwaves show codes; dishwashers report with blinking patterns instead. Both are erased by cutting the power, so a photograph is worth more than a description.

The measurements the symptom calls for

Temperatures actually held rather than displayed, current draw on a heating circuit, water pressure at the valve. A measurement is what separates the likely part from the obvious one.

Scope and price in writing, before anything opens

You hear the figure and what it covers before any work starts, and the diagnostic comes off the bill when you go ahead.

What you have at the end of it

The reading, the likely part and the figure, in writing. If the answer is that nothing needs repairing, you have that in writing too — which is worth more than a discount.
