# GE icemaker not making ice

### Check the freezer temperature before anything else

Ice production depends on it, and GE's recommended freezer setting is 0°F. An icemaker that has slowed down is very often a freezer that has drifted up two or three degrees — which no one notices, because the food is still frozen. That makes this a temperature problem wearing an icemaker's clothes, and replacing the icemaker will not fix it.

### What normal actually is

GE publishes cube dimensions and production rates by cabinet style — their regular crescent cube measures about two and a half inches long by three quarters high and three quarters thick. It is worth knowing before paying anybody, because a great many icemaker calls end with a machine performing to specification for a household that has grown.

### Why this is a water problem more often than a machine one

Everything upstream of the icemaker decides what it can do: pressure at the valve, the state of the filter, the shut-off valve at the supply. In this county the supply is the usual culprit and the icemaker is the usual suspect, which is how expensive parts get fitted to solve cheap problems.

A freezer that has drifted warm

The single commonest cause. Ice needs 0°F; at five degrees warmer the machine still works and produces a fraction of what it should.

An old saddle valve that has silted closed is a Miami classic, and a filter past six months restricts flow enough to starve the fill on this water.

The shut-off arm or sensor

Held up by a bag, a box or a bin pushed too far in. The machine believes the bin is full and stops, which is exactly what it is designed to do.

The fill valve or the module

Tested rather than swapped. This is the part everybody expects to buy and it is the last one on GE's list, not the first.

Read the freezer with a thermometer

Not the display. 0°F is the number, and anything above it costs production.

Check the water shut-off is fully open

And that the line is not kinked behind the appliance after it was last moved.

Look at the filter date

Six months is the maker's interval. On this water it is optimistic, and a starved fill looks exactly like a dying icemaker.

Lift the shut-off arm and let it drop

It should move freely. Anything holding it up stops production entirely.

The bin is empty and nothing is falling

What it usually means

Empty bin, or far less ice than there was

Cubes hollow, small or misshapen

Started after a power cut or a filter change

Check it against GE's published rates before assuming a problem. If it is genuinely below them, start at the freezer temperature and the water supply.

### It stopped after the power went out.

GE's PF code appears after an interruption, and the icemaker usually needs a cycle or two to catch up. Give it a day before calling anybody.
