# GE washer will not drain

### Open the pump filter before anything else

On most GE washers it is behind a small panel at the front bottom, and it is meant to be opened. Coins, drawstrings, hairpins and underwires collect there and stop the pump doing its job without breaking it. Put a towel and a shallow tray down first — there is more water behind that panel than anybody expects.

### Slow and stopped are different problems

A washer that drains slowly is fighting a restriction — the filter, a hose, a standpipe. A washer that does not drain at all has lost the pump or is completely blocked. Knowing which you have before the visit changes what we bring and what it costs.

### The filter is meant to be opened

It is a service point, not a sealed part, and clearing it is ordinary maintenance rather than a repair. A machine whose filter has never been opened in five years will eventually produce this symptom on its own.

A blocked pump filter

The commonest cause by a wide margin, and the one you can check yourself in ten minutes.

A kinked or blocked drain hose

Behind the machine, where it gets crushed when the washer is pushed back into place.

The house standpipe

Not the appliance at all. A standpipe that has silted up drains slowly and backs up, and it looks identical from the front of the machine.

The drain pump itself

Tested for current and obstruction before it is replaced, because a pump straining against a blockage measures differently from a failed one.

Open and clear the pump filter

Towel down first. What is in it is usually the answer.

Pull the machine out and look at the hose

It should run without a kink and it should not be pushed too far into the standpipe.

Watch how fast it drains, if it drains at all

Slow is restriction. Nothing at all is pump, hose or filter.

Try a drain-and-spin cycle on its own

It isolates the drain from the rest of the wash and tells us more than a full cycle does.

The cycle ends with the drum full of water

What it usually means

Water left in the drum at the end

It drains slowly, or only sometimes

Clothes come out soaking rather than damp

### Can I clear the filter myself?

Yes, and you should try. Expect water — a quart or more sits behind that panel. If it comes out full of debris, that was your repair.

### It drains but the clothes are soaking.

That is a spin problem rather than a drain one, and it usually lands on the lid switch or the drive.
