How Long GE Appliances Last, and What Shortens Them Here
Broadly: refrigerators and ranges around thirteen to fifteen years, dishwashers and washers about nine to twelve, dryers a little longer than washers, microwaves under ten. Those are national figures and South Florida subtracts from all of them, because the same appliances work harder here — a condenser sheds heat into a hotter kitchen, a defrost circuit clears ice that humidity keeps making, an ice machine scales faster, and a dryer runs twice because its duct is long, flat and full of damp lint. Three habits move the numbers back: clean the condenser yearly, clean the dryer vent yearly, and replace door seals when they fail rather than when they are noticed.

How long do ranges last — and everything else
The general figures, which are easy to find and worth stating once:

Now the part those tables never mention.
What South Florida takes off
Every one of those numbers assumes a house in a temperate climate. Here, four things push in the same direction.
Heat. A refrigerator sheds its heat into the room, and in August that room is warmer than the appliance was designed around. Longer run times, more compressor hours, and a garage unit that is not garage-rated is being asked to do something it cannot.
Humidity. Every door opening puts wet air into a cold cabinet. The defrost circuit spends its life clearing ice a drier house would never make, and a tired door seal doubles that work long before anybody notices the door.
Water. Scale ends ice machines here faster than any component fails, and it shortens the useful life of anything that heats water.
Duct geometry. Laundry rooms in single-story houses vent through long horizontal runs. A dryer running two cycles is doing double the hours for the same laundry, and its heating element pays for that.
What adds the years back
Three things, and they are unglamorous.
Clean the condenser once a year. GE's own first answer for a refrigerator that is not cold enough. It is the difference between a compressor working and a compressor straining, over a decade.
Clean the dryer vent once a year. It restores drying time, saves electricity, stops heating elements dying early, and removes the recognized fire risk in a laundry room. There is no other single job on this site with that return.
Replace door seals when they fail. They are among the cheapest parts on a cold appliance and they are costing run time every day they are left. The paper test takes ten seconds: close the door on a sheet of paper and pull.
Everything else — filters on schedule, descaling on this water, not overloading a washer — helps. Those three do the most.
When the number stops mattering
An appliance's age is a prior, not a verdict. What decides a specific decision is which part failed:
- A seal, an element, a pump or a sensor on a twelve-year-old machine is usually worth doing.
- A sealed system or a control board on the same machine usually is not.
GE makes the first half of that easy — the serial carries a two-letter date code, so the age is readable off the plate in seconds. We read it before quoting anything, because a repair figure without an age beside it is only half a decision.
Questions people ask about this
Do appliances really last less than they used to?
They are more efficient and more electronic, and electronics do not corrode gracefully in a humid house. Whether that nets out worse is arguable; what is not arguable is that maintenance matters more than it did.
Does the badge change the lifespan?
Less than people assume — GE, GE Profile, Café and Hotpoint share most of their engineering. What differs is finish, controls and features rather than how long the refrigeration lasts.
What is the single biggest thing I can do?
For a refrigerator, the condenser. For a dryer, the vent. Both are cheap, both are annual, and both are things GE names first in their own troubleshooting.
Is it worth buying an extended plan?
That is your call and we do not sell them. What we can say is that most of what goes wrong in the first five years is inexpensive, and what is expensive tends to arrive later than a plan runs.
