What C4 means, in the maker's own words
The machine filled twice after a power failure, which GE attributes to a float switch stuck or failed, or to a clogged drain or sump. It is one of the codes their own table says you can often clear yourself.
Where this code actually appears
On the control panel, and usually with a sound. GE describes their refrigerator codes as flashing green on the display and typically accompanied by a beeping, and the range, microwave and dishwasher tables all describe codes you can read from the front of the appliance. That is the opposite of some makes, where the number is written into a hidden log and never shown — here, if something is wrong, the appliance generally tells you. Photograph what it says before cutting the power, because a reset erases it and the code is most of the diagnosis.
What to do about it
- Touch START and then CANCEL/RESET.
- Tap on the float cover to un-stick the float — the plastic cover that looks like an upside-down cup in the front left corner of the tub floor. GE describes it exactly that way because nobody knows what a float is.
- Check the sump at the back bottom of the tub for debris. GE's own description: it looks like an upside-down silverware basket and can become clogged.
- If it persists after all of that, it is a service call.
