What C1 means, in the maker's own words
The pump out during drain has exceeded two minutes. The dishwasher tried to empty, took too long about it, and stopped — which points at the path the water leaves by rather than at the pump that pushes it.
Where this code actually appears
On the control panel, and usually with a sound. GE describes their refrigerator codes as flashing green on the display and typically accompanied by a beeping, and the range, microwave and dishwasher tables all describe codes you can read from the front of the appliance. That is the opposite of some makes, where the number is written into a hidden log and never shown — here, if something is wrong, the appliance generally tells you. Photograph what it says before cutting the power, because a reset erases it and the code is most of the diagnosis.
What to do about it
- Clean the air gap, if the sink has one. GE names this first and it is free.
- Check the drain hose: replace or reposition it, and make sure it still has its high loop. A hose that has slipped down siphons and holds water.
- Run the disposer to clear it. And if the disposer is new, check that the dishwasher plug was knocked out when it was installed — that alone holds water in the tub every cycle.
- If it persists after all three, the drain pump is tested rather than assumed.
