Why a GE Dryer Takes Two Cycles in Florida, and What It Is Costing

Feel the air at the outside vent hood while the dryer runs. If it is a trickle rather than a push, the duct is restricted and that is the answer — not the heating element, not the timer, not the machine. A dryer is a fan with a heater in it, and everything it does depends on air leaving the building. In South Florida the run is usually longer and more horizontal than the manuals assume, it carries humid air, and it fills faster as a result. A restricted vent costs drying time and electricity, and it is what kills heating elements early: a thermal cut-out opens because the housing overheated, which is airflow rather than a part that simply aged.

The four places lint packs on the way out A vented dryer heats air, passes it through the drum and throws that now wet air outside, so everything about its temperature depends on the air leaving freely. Four places restrict it. The lint screen is the one people clean, and a screen filmed with fabric softener residue looks clean while blocking air; water poured on it should pass straight through rather than beading. The housing the screen sits in packs with lint that never leaves on its own and needs a vacuum crevice tool. The run itself is worst at the elbow immediately behind the machine, where the bend is sharpest and the lint wettest, and worst again inside the wall where nobody has looked since the house was built. The flap outside decides everything: painted shut, glued with lint, screened over or nested in, and a perfect duct behind a closed flap is a closed duct. Why the humidity here changes the arithmetic The machine pushes wet air into outdoor air that is already near saturated, so the lint it leaves behind arrives damp and packs into a mat instead of blowing clear. Once a year, all the way out.
Run it on air fluff and go outside: the flap should swing fully open with enough air behind it to feel on your hand. That one look finds the problem more often than anything else here.

Start the dryer on a normal heat cycle. Go outside to the vent hood. Put your hand in front of it.

Air should be moving strongly enough that you notice it — enough to hold your hand off the flap. If it is a trickle, or if the flap barely lifts, the duct is restricted and you have your answer in under a minute.

That single check separates the commonest dryer problem in this county from every other one, and it does not require opening anything.

Why the duct and not the dryer

A dryer heats air, tumbles clothes through it, and pushes the wet air out of the building. If the last part is not happening properly, the first two carry on regardless — which is precisely why a restricted dryer looks like it is working. It heats. It tumbles. It just does not dry.

South Florida makes this worse in three specific ways.

The runs are longer and flatter. In a single-story house with the laundry in the middle, the duct travels horizontally to an outside wall, sometimes with two elbows. Lint settles in horizontal runs the way it never does in a short vertical one.

The air is humid. Wet lint packs rather than blows through.

And the outside flap is exposed to weather all year. A flap propped open by lint lets humid outside air back in, which is a specifically Florida version of this problem — the dryer is fighting the climate as well as the duct.

What a restricted vent actually costs

Why the fuse opened, read backwards A thermal fuse is a one-time safety device with a link that opens permanently at a set temperature and never closes again. It is not a thermostat, which cycles thousands of times over the life of the machine. So a blown fuse translates as: the inside of the dryer got hotter than the manufacturer allowed, and the last line of protection did its job. Heat cannot get out because the exhaust is restricted, and the exhaust is restricted because the duct is blocked. Three devices act in order — the cycling thermostat holds the drum in a normal band, the high limit thermostat cuts the heat circuit when the climb passes it, and the thermal fuse opens permanently and takes the machine out of service. If the fuse opened, the two in front of it did not stop the climb. Fitting a new fuse and leaving the duct alone puts the warning light out and changes nothing. THE FUSE IS THE MESSENGER. Machine dead. A new fuse on a blocked duct puts the warning light out The two devices in front of it did not stop the climb, so clear the whole run first — and test both thermostats at the same time. A second or third fuse is the machine repeating itself.
On many of these the fuse sits in the motor circuit, so the dryer goes silent rather than cold — which is why "completely dead" and "keeps blowing fuses" are so often the same phone call.

Three things, in increasing order of expense.

Time and electricity. Two cycles instead of one, every load, indefinitely.

The heating element or the cut-out. This is the part people do not connect. A thermal cut-out is protection: it opens because the housing got too hot, and the housing got too hot because air was not leaving. Fitting a new one and closing the machine up is a repair that fails again — which is why we do not quote that job without the vent.

The safety one. A restricted dryer vent is the recognized fire risk in a laundry room. That is the honest reason we push vent work rather than parts, and it is why this is the one line on our price list that we would rather you booked before anything is wrong.

Where the packing actually is

Cleaning the lint filter is good habit and it is the smallest part of the job. The places that matter:

  • The housing under the screen. Lint that got past the filter over years.
  • The first elbow behind the machine. Crushed when the dryer was pushed back into place — foil transition hoses are the usual casualty.
  • The run itself, especially any horizontal section.
  • The outside hood, where the flap and the screen collect what the rest of the duct delivered.

We measure the airflow before and after, so the improvement is a number rather than an impression.

When it is genuinely the appliance

After the vent is clear and the airflow is measured, a dryer that still will not dry has a real problem, and it is usually one of these:

  • The heating element or a cut-out, on electric.
  • The igniter, flame sensor or valve coils, on gas — diagnosable by watching one ignition cycle and seeing where the sequence stops.
  • The moisture sensor, which ends cycles early on auto-dry settings.
  • Half the supply, on electric. A dryer running on one leg of a 240V feed tumbles perfectly and never heats. That is a breaker, not an appliance, and it is free to check.

GE publishes no error codes for basic dryers, so this one is diagnosed by measurement rather than read off a display — which is exactly why the free test at the top of this page is worth doing before anybody comes out.

Questions people ask about this

I clean the lint filter every load.

Good, and it is the smallest part of the job. The packing happens in the housing under the screen, at the first elbow behind the machine, in the run through the wall, and at the outside flap.

It dries on high heat but not on low.

Still airflow. A restricted duct shows up first on the gentler cycles, which have less heat to compensate with.

Could it be the moisture sensor?

It could, and it is worth testing — but after the vent, not before. A sensor sees damp clothes accurately in a dryer that cannot move air.

How often should the vent be cleaned here?

About once a year for most households and more with pets or a long run. Humid air and lint combine faster in this climate than in a dry one.
