Where seals actually go, and what they take with them
They fail on the hinge side. That is where the gasket is compressed hardest and where a door dropping a few millimeters over ten years pulls it away from the frame. The symptoms are not dramatic: frost in one corner, a compressor that runs longer than it used to, a power bill that has crept. Replacing a seal on a door that is out of alignment lasts a season, so alignment is part of the job rather than an extra — the seal is only as good as what holds it against the cabinet.

How do I tell if the seal has gone?
Shut a dollar bill in the door and pull. If it slides out with no resistance the seal is not gripping there.
Can a seal be cleaned rather than replaced?
Often, and it is worth trying. Hardened rubber does not come back, but a dirty one seals badly and cleans up in ten minutes.
