Check the disposer and the air gap
A new disposer with an unremoved plug is the single commonest cause of this call, and it is a five-minute answer rather than a repair.

The drain hose and its high loop
A hose that has slipped down siphons and holds water. Re-securing it is the repair.

Filter, sump and the check valve
Cleared and inspected. Glass, seeds and labels end up here and stop the pump doing its job without breaking it.

Tested for current and obstruction before it is replaced, because a blocked pump and a failed one behave the same from the doorway.

Two things that are not the dishwasher
A new disposer arrives with the dishwasher inlet plugged, and if the installer did not knock the plug out the dishwasher has nowhere to drain from its first cycle. The high loop is the other one: a drain hose that does not rise above the machine lets the sink drain back into it. Both are outside the appliance and both present as a broken dishwasher. Then the filter and the sump, which people rarely know is theirs to clean, and only then the pump, which is the expensive one.
