GE cooktop element and switch repair

One zone stopped and the rest are fine. On a radiant top that is usually the element or its switch rather than the control — which is good news on price, because a failed control normally takes more than one zone with it.

How this visit actually goes

The same order every time, so nothing is opened and nothing is charged before you have seen the figure and said yes.

  1. 01

Test the element and the switch

Separately. An infinite switch that has burned at its contacts is as common as a failed element and costs less.

  2. 02

Check the wiring at the terminal block

Heat-damaged connectors under a cooktop are common and are the actual cause more often than people expect.

  3. 03

    Inspect the glass

A crack ends the conversation: the surface is replaced or the appliance is, because a spill through it is an electrical hazard.

  4. 04

Prove every zone at every setting

Not just the one that failed, because switches that are on their way out show up here.

  5. 05

    Every zone at every setting

Switches on their way out show themselves at particular settings rather than at all of them, so a single test at full power passes a cooktop that is failing.

    GE cooktop repair in Miami

Drop-in cooktops in all three technologies. The most common call is a single burner or zone that stopped, and the most common surprise is that a radiant or induction surface can be performing exactly as designed while the cooking is poor — because the pan is wrong for it.

    GE range repair in Miami

Freestanding and slide-in ranges in every fuel GE sells: electric, gas, induction and dual fuel, single and double oven. This is the appliance that reports itself most clearly — GE publishes a table of the codes a range displays — and also the one where the display is most often misread, because half those codes point at the same circuit.

    • Electric, gas, induction and dual fuel
    • GE publishes a code table for these — we read it, not guess
    • Self-clean is behind a surprising share of the calls

About GE cooktop element and switch repair

One dead zone points away from the board

A single zone that has stopped while the others work is good news: the control is talking to the rest of the cooktop, so the problem is between the switch and that element rather than in the board everybody fears. Elements and infinite switches are ordinary parts at ordinary prices. Cracked glass is the one exception on this page — it is a safety matter rather than a cosmetic one, because the element beneath is live and the crack lets moisture to it.

Questions about GE cooktop element and switch repair

Only the large burner is dead. Is that expensive?

Usually not. A single zone points at the element or its switch, both of which are ordinary parts.

The glass is cracked but everything still works.

Stop using it. A crack lets spills reach live components, and that is a different kind of problem from a cooking one.
