The serial carries GE's two-letter date code, so the age of the machine is known before we arrive. That decides what is worth spending as much as the symptom does.

GE's ranges and microwaves show codes; dishwashers report with blinking patterns instead. Both are erased by cutting the power, so a photograph is worth more than a description.

A diagnosis is the work, not the preamble to it. On a GE the first two questions are the ones GE's own support pages ask: what is the appliance reporting, and is the cause outside the appliance at all. A dryer that will not dry is usually a duct. A dishwasher that will not drain is often the disposer plug nobody knocked out. Both look like a failed machine from the kitchen and neither is one. The fee is credited toward the repair, so on a job that goes ahead you pay it once.
