Service

GE ice machine cleaning and descaling

The cheapest service here and the one that prevents the most expensive. Scale is what ends ice machines in South Florida: mineral builds on the evaporator, ice takes longer to form and release, and the machine halves its output over a year without ever stopping. The maker's six-month interval is optimistic on this water.

How this visit actually goes

The same order every time, so nothing is opened and nothing is charged before you have seen the figure and said yes.

  1. 01

    Measure the output before

Cubes per cycle and cycle time, so the improvement is a number rather than an impression.

  2. 02

Descale the evaporator and the path

With a food-safe descaler and the maker's own procedure, not a household product.

  3. 03

Clean the water path and the reservoir

Where scale is, biofilm usually is too, and both affect taste as well as production.

  4. 04

Measure again, and set an interval

Based on what came out of it. Machines here usually need it more often than the manual says, and knowing that is the point of the visit.

  5. 05

The interval, set from your own machine

Cubes per cycle before and after, and a descaling interval based on how much scale came out. That is the honest way to schedule this on South Florida water.

GE ice maker repair in Miami

Standalone and undercounter ice makers, separate from the icemaker inside a refrigerator and a different appliance to repair. In South Florida these run harder than anywhere: entertaining outdoors, water that scales quickly, and a machine that is asked to produce all year rather than in summer bursts. Scale is what ends most of them, and scale is preventable.

Most of what we are called out to here is not the sealed system: it is the dispenser, the icemaker, the defrost circuit or a door that stopped sealing in a house where the air is wet nine months of the year.

In more detail

About GE ice machine cleaning and descaling

Scale ends more machines than components do

An icemaker that has slowed, is making cloudy or small cubes, or has started cycling without producing, is usually scaled rather than broken. Hard water leaves mineral behind at every freeze, and the deposit both insulates the evaporator and narrows the water path. Output usually recovers the same day. The water path gets checked while the machine is open — the fill valve, the tubing and the pump are all reachable at that point and all cost less to attend to then than in a second visit.

Questions about GE ice machine cleaning and descaling

How often should this be done here?

Every six to twelve months on South Florida water. Machines on a filtered supply go longer, but not indefinitely.

Will the ice taste different afterwards?

Usually better. Scale holds onto whatever else is in the water, and a descaled machine tastes of the water rather than of the machine.
