Establish when, not just where
Fill, wash, drain or spin — each points somewhere different, and water travels before it appears.

Inspect the boot seal, all the way round
Turning it out. Tears at the bottom are the classic, and debris trapped in the fold is what makes them.

Pressurize the hoses and connections
Including the washers, which harden and weep long before they burst.

Check the level control and the overfill
A pressure switch or a blocked air dome fills past the seal on certain cycles only, which is exactly the intermittent case.

Which cycle it leaks on is the diagnosis
A leak during fill is a hose, a valve or a connection. A leak during wash is the door seal or the tub. A leak during drain is the pump, the drain hose or the standpipe backing up. Knowing which of the three it is narrows the job before anybody opens the machine, so it is the first thing we ask. On front-loaders the door boot is the usual answer, and the fold at the bottom of it holds the grit that eventually cuts it.
