Symptom
GE oven door locked and will not open
GE documents this specifically, and the first answer is usually patience: the lock will not release until the cavity is below a set temperature, and that can take well over an hour after the cycle ends. If it is cool and still locked, or LOC DOOR is flashing with no clean cycle having run, that is the lock circuit.

Four ordinary causes
What this usually turns out to be
Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.
-
The oven is still hot
Not a problem at all. The lock is doing its job and time is the answer.
Diagnostic visit from $95 -
The lock motor
It drives the latch and it fails with the door in either position. GE's F9 and FC both point at this circuit.
Oven door and lock repair from $185 -
The lock switch
Which tells the control where the latch is. Cheaper than the motor and produces the same symptom.

Door alignment
A door that has dropped on its hinges stops the latch engaging cleanly, which produces this intermittently and confuses everybody.

In five minutes
Before you call anybody
None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.

01
Wait until the oven is properly cold
Longer than you think. This is the answer often enough to always try it first.
-
02
Power down at the breaker for a minute, then restore
GE's own reset for the control.
-
03
Note whether a clean cycle actually ran
LOC DOOR with no clean cycle selected is a different situation from the same message after one.
-
04
Look at how the door sits closed
A visible droop at the handle end points at hinges rather than at the lock.
How it shows up
What people describe when they call
A shortcut
Narrow it down before anybody arrives
A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem before anybody opens anything, which is why it is worth photographing before it clears.
If there is no code at all
The data plate is inside the cabinet, upper left wall or behind the grille. All models

About GE oven door locked and will not open
Let it cool completely before doing anything
The door lock is a safety device and it will not release while the cavity is hot. After a self-clean cycle that means well over an hour, sometimes considerably more in a warm kitchen. A great many calls about a locked oven are placed forty minutes too early, and the appliance opens itself while we are on the way.
The lock is a safety device, not a nuisance
Self-clean runs the cavity hot enough to be genuinely dangerous, and the lock exists so that nobody opens it at that temperature. An oven that refuses to unlock while it is hot is working exactly as designed.
Why this circuit fails when it does
The lock motor and its switch spend most of their lives doing nothing and are then asked to work at the highest temperature the appliance ever reaches. That is why self-clean is when they give up, and why we test the repair with a short clean cycle rather than a cold one.

Before you book
Questions about GE oven door locked and will not open
Can I force it open?
Please do not. You will bend the latch or the door and turn a small repair into a large one. If it is cold and still locked, book it.
It unlocked eventually. Should I still get it looked at?
If it took much longer than an hour after cooling, yes — that is the lock circuit beginning to fail, and it is cheaper before it fails completely.
