Symptom

GE microwave runs but does not heat

GE's own list starts with two checks that cost nothing: whether the timer was set instead of a cook function, and whether the door is closing fully onto its safety interlocks. After those, it is the high-voltage side — and that is licensed work, because a microwave capacitor holds a dangerous charge after the appliance is unplugged.

Four ordinary causes

What this usually turns out to be

Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.

In five minutes

Before you call anybody

None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.

  1. 01

Confirm you selected a cook function

Not the timer. It is the first thing GE asks and it is right often enough to ask.

  2. 02

Open the door and close it firmly

Then try again. If it heats, the latch is your repair.

  3. 03

    Photograph any code

And check it against the microwave table rather than the range one.

  4. 04

On an over-the-range unit, test the fan and lights separately

They are a different circuit, and a unit where only the fan has died is a much smaller repair.

How it shows up

What people describe when they call

  • “Runs a full cycle, nothing gets warm”
  • “The plate turns and the light works”
  • “An F code on the display”
A flexible metal dryer vent duct pulled away from the wall outlet in a bright laundry room, a small drift of grey lint on the pale tile floor beside it.

A shortcut

Narrow it down before anybody arrives

A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem before anybody opens anything, which is why it is worth photographing before it clears.

If there is no code at all

The data plate is inside the cabinet, upper left wall or behind the grille. All models

About GE microwave runs but does not heat

Check the door closes firmly, and that you used a cook function

GE names both first. The door has to engage its safety interlocks before the magnetron will run at all, and a door that looks shut but sits a fraction proud will tumble the plate and heat nothing. The other one is more embarrassing and just as common: the timer counts down without cooking anything.

The part we would rather nobody opened

A microwave capacitor holds a dangerous charge after the appliance is unplugged, and it does not care how confident anybody is. This is the one category where we would rather a customer called somebody competent than took the case off.

When it is not worth repairing

A countertop microwave, once the high-voltage side has gone, rarely is. A built-in, a drawer or an over-the-range unit usually is, because replacing it is joinery as well as shopping. We will tell you which you have before quoting.

A GE microwave not heating, with the plate turning and the light on, is usually the high-voltage side — and that is licensed work, because the capacitor holds a charge after the appliance is unplugged.

Questions about GE microwave runs but does not heat

There are sparks inside.

Stop and unplug it. GE calls that arcing, and running it damages the cavity further every time. A scorched cavity often ends the appliance.

It shows PF or 888.

That is a power failure notice rather than a problem. Cancel/Off clears it and the appliance works normally.
