What DE means, in the maker's own words
Demo mode, and it is the most misread code GE publishes. The lights work, the controls respond and the display behaves normally — and the cooling system is switched off on purpose, because this is the setting showroom floor models run in. An appliance in demo mode looks perfectly healthy and is not cooling at all.
Where this code actually appears
On the control panel, and usually with a sound. GE describes their refrigerator codes as flashing green on the display and typically accompanied by a beeping, and the range, microwave and dishwasher tables all describe codes you can read from the front of the appliance. That is the opposite of some makes, where the number is written into a hidden log and never shown — here, if something is wrong, the appliance generally tells you. Photograph what it says before cutting the power, because a reset erases it and the code is most of the diagnosis.

Refrigerators with electronic dispenser controls · often arrives set this way. GE says plainly on their own range and oven table that they cannot list every code for every model past and present, so a code missing from their table is not proof that your appliance cannot raise it — and a code in it is not proof that yours can. The model number settles it.
What to do about it
- Read the case. DE in capitals is demo mode; dE in lower case is the defrost system, and they are completely different situations.
- Unplug the refrigerator for a minute or two and plug it back in — GE's own first step for clearing demo mode.
- If DE is still displayed after that, GE asks to be contacted with the model number, because the exit sequence differs between models.
- Check the cabinet temperature once it clears. A refrigerator that has been in demo mode has not been cooling, whatever the display said.
