Symptom

GE washer will not spin

Balance first, then the interlock, then the drive — and the first of those is not a repair. A washer that refuses to spin an unbalanced load is protecting itself and behaving exactly as designed, which is why the useful question is whether it happens on every load or only the heavy ones.

Four ordinary causes

What this usually turns out to be

Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.

In five minutes

Before you call anybody

None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.

  1. 01

Try a mixed load and a small one

Two cycles tell you whether this is balance or the machine.

  2. 02

Listen at the start of the spin

A click and no movement points at the drive. A hum and no movement points elsewhere.

  3. 03

    Turn the drum by hand

Grinding, play or resistance each name a different part.

  4. 04

    Check the lid closes fully

On top loaders, the switch is under the lid edge and a bent striker stops it engaging.

How it shows up

What people describe when they call

  • “Clothes soaking wet at the end of the cycle”
  • “It tries to spin, then stops or slows”
  • “A single heavy item is involved”
Hand tools laid out in a row on a folded grey cloth — nut drivers, a multimeter with a blank unlit screen, a putty knife — on a pale worktop in daylight.

A shortcut

Narrow it down before anybody arrives

A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem before anybody opens anything, which is why it is worth photographing before it clears.

About GE washer will not spin

Does it happen on every load, or only some?

One towel, a rug, or a duvet spun alone will trip the balance protection on any modern washer. If the machine spins a mixed load properly and refuses a single heavy item, nothing has failed. If it refuses everything, then the interlock or the drive is next — and that is a genuine repair.

The machine may be right

Balance protection exists because an unbalanced drum at spin speed damages the appliance and the floor. A washer refusing a single duvet is not broken. We would rather tell you that on the phone than charge for finding it out.

How the drive tells you which part it is

A belt slips and squeals, a coupler shears and gives free play, a bearing grinds and rumbles. Turning the drum by hand before opening anything narrows it to one of those in seconds, which is why we ask you to try it.

It spins sometimes.

Then it is balance or an intermittent interlock, and the loads it fails on tell us which.

There is a loud noise when it tries.

Noise plus no spin points at the drive rather than the switch. Worth mentioning on the phone.
