- “One zone dead, the rest normal”
- “A gas burner that clicks and never lights”
- “An induction zone that cuts out under load”
Symptom
GE a burner or zone has stopped
A single zone failing while the others work is good news on price: a failed control normally takes more than one zone with it. On radiant tops it is usually the element or its switch, on gas the electrode or the spark module, and on induction the coil's own electronics.

Five ordinary causes
What this usually turns out to be
Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.
-
A radiant element or its switch
An infinite switch burned at its contacts is as common as a failed element and costs less. Both are tested.
Cooktop element and switch repair from $165 -
A heat-damaged terminal block
Under the cooktop, and a genuine cause that is missed by anybody who only tests the element.
Cooktop element and switch repair from $165 -
The electrode or spark module, on gas
Persistent clicking after a spill is usually moisture or debris rather than a part. All burners clicking at once is the module.
Gas range igniter and burner repair from $175 -
Induction coil electronics
Zone by zone, because they are separate assemblies. One failing does not condemn the rest.
Induction cooktop repair from $245 -
The pan, on radiant and induction
GE publishes guidance on cookware because the complaint reaches them constantly. A warped or light pan cooks in a ring and it is not the appliance.
Diagnostic visit from $95
In five minutes
Before you call anybody
None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.
-
01
Try every zone at every setting
Switches on their way out show up at particular settings rather than all of them.
-
02
On gas, dry and clean around the electrode
After a spill, that is often the whole repair.
-
03
On induction, swap the pan between zones
A pan that works on one zone and not another is information rather than a second problem.
-
04
Look at the glass
A crack is a stop. Once anything spills through it, it is an electrical hazard.
How it shows up
What people describe when they call
A shortcut
Narrow it down before anybody arrives
A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem before anybody opens anything, which is why it is worth photographing before it clears.
If there is no code at all
The data plate is inside the cabinet, upper left wall or behind the grille. All models

About GE a burner or zone has stopped
Note exactly which zones fail and when
The pattern is most of the diagnosis. One zone dead points at that zone's element, switch or coil. All the gas burners clicking together points at one spark module rather than four electrodes. An induction zone that works and then cuts out is usually protection responding to heat or to a pan it cannot detect.
Three technologies, three failure patterns
Radiant elements burn out and switches stick. Gas burners clog and igniters weaken. Induction fails in its electronics, zone by zone, and protects itself by switching off. Knowing which is under the glass changes the first question we ask.
The pan is part of the appliance
On radiant and induction, cookware is not an accessory — it is half the heat transfer. A fair share of cooktop calls end with a demonstration rather than a part, and GE publishes their own guidance on it for the same reason.
A GE cooktop burner not working while the others are fine is the good version of this call: a failed control normally takes more than one zone with it, so a single dead burner points at that zone's element, switch or coil.

Questions about GE a burner or zone has stopped
The whole cooktop is dead.
That is supply or control rather than an element, and it is a different visit. Check the breaker first.
It heats but only on high.
That is the infinite switch, and it is one of the cheaper parts on the appliance.
