    Icemaker not making ice

    GE's own list runs temperature, then water supply, then the shut-off arm — and every one of those is cheaper than the icemaker assembly people expect to buy. Before any of it, there is a question worth asking: is the machine actually below specification, or has the household grown? GE publishes production rates, and a good share of these calls end there.

    We find out what is actually wrong before anybody quotes a part. On a GE that starts with the two things their own support pages start with — what the appliance is reporting, and whether anything outside it is the cause — because a dryer that will not dry is usually a vent and a dishwasher that will not drain is often a disposer.     Appliance maintenance

    The visit that prevents the expensive one. Condenser coils in a city where floors carry dust and hair, a dryer vent that has been quietly filling for three years, an ice machine scaling on hard water, filters that are past their interval. None of it is glamorous and all of it is cheaper than what it prevents.

    Appliance installation

    Installation done so the appliance can be serviced later, and so it performs the way its specification says. A built-in that has no clearance loses cooling every August, a dryer vented into a long horizontal run never dries in one cycle, and a dishwasher connected to a new disposer with the plug still in it will hold water from the first cycle.

    Icemaker repair

    The icemaker inside a refrigerator, which is a different appliance from a standalone ice machine and a different repair. GE's own list runs temperature, water supply, then the shut-off arm before the module — and each of those is cheaper than the assembly everybody expects to buy.

    Condenser and airflow service

    GE's own first answer for a unit that is not cold enough, and it is right often enough to be worth doing before anything else. A condenser at floor level in a Miami kitchen collects what floors collect, and a coil that cannot shed heat makes the compressor run longer for less cold — which reads as a failing appliance and is not one.

    Sealed system repair

    Compressor, condenser, evaporator, drier and the tubing between them — the refrigerant circuit. Licensed work with recovery equipment, and the most over-diagnosed repair on a cold appliance in this city. Everything cheaper is ruled out first, and if the arithmetic favors replacing the appliance we say so before the work rather than after it.

    Water filter and line service

    The smallest job on this list and the one that prevents a run of others. On South Florida water a filter reaches the end of its useful life before the six-month interval does, and a starved water path produces slow dispensing, hollow cubes and an icemaker that looks like it is failing.

    Ice machine cleaning and descaling

    The cheapest service here and the one that prevents the most expensive. Scale is what ends ice machines in South Florida: mineral builds on the evaporator, ice takes longer to form and release, and the machine halves its output over a year without ever stopping. The maker's six-month interval is optimistic on this water.

About GE ice makers

Not the same appliance as the icemaker in a refrigerator

A refrigerator's icemaker borrows the freezer's cold and makes ice slowly in the background. A dedicated ice maker has its own refrigeration system, its own harvest cycle and its own water path, and it is built to produce continuously. They fail in different ways and they are priced differently.

Scale is the local enemy

South Florida water leaves mineral behind on every surface it evaporates from, and an ice machine is a device for evaporating water on purpose. Descaling at the interval the maker recommends is optimistic here; the machines we see surviving longest are cleaned more often than that.

What we check, in order

Water in, freeze, harvest, drain — because a problem at each stage looks the same from outside the cabinet and completely different from inside it. The stage it stops at is the diagnosis.

What GE publishes about these, and what they do not

Their support base carries production rates and cube dimensions, which is genuinely useful — it lets you tell a slow machine from a normal one before paying anybody. What they publish no table for is error codes on built-in ice makers. There is nothing to look up, and any page offering you a list has made it up.

Questions about GE ice makers

Production dropped off but it still makes some ice.

That is the signature of scale, and on this water it arrives faster than the manual expects. Mineral builds on the evaporator, the ice takes longer to form and release, and the machine quietly halves its output over a year without ever stopping. A descale is the cheapest service on this list and it prevents the most expensive.

It makes ice but the cubes are hollow or small.

Water volume or water pressure, most often — a filter overdue, a valve partly closed, or a line that is restricted. On a machine that harvests on a timer rather than on weight, less water per cycle means a smaller cube rather than a longer cycle.

Does it show an error code when something is wrong?

On built-in ice makers, GE publishes none — and we would rather tell you that than invent a table. Diagnosis on these is done by watching the cycle: fill, freeze, harvest. Which stage it stops in tells you where to look, and it is the reason we ask how long you have watched it.

It is leaking water underneath.

Three usual sources: the fill valve, the drain, or condensation from a door or lid seal that has stopped sealing. On an outdoor or garage installation, condensation is far more common than any of the plumbing, and it is not a repair — it is where the machine is living.
