    Refrigerator not cooling

    The most common call on any make, and on a GE there is a free answer to rule out first that nobody expects: demo mode runs the lights and the controls and switches the cooling off on purpose. After that, GE's own troubleshooting order is settings, then airflow, then defrost — and the sealed system everybody fears is last.

    Icemaker not making ice

    GE's own list runs temperature, then water supply, then the shut-off arm — and every one of those is cheaper than the icemaker assembly people expect to buy. Before any of it, there is a question worth asking: is the machine actually below specification, or has the household grown? GE publishes production rates, and a good share of these calls end there.

    Water leaking inside or underneath

    Water inside the cabinet and water on the floor are usually two different repairs, and both are cheaper than they look. Inside, it is nearly always the defrost drain iced over. Underneath, it is the drain pan, a water line connection, or ice that has been melting somewhere it should not.

    Running constantly

    A refrigerator in South Florida runs longer than the same appliance anywhere dry, so long run times alone are not evidence of anything. What matters is whether it is holding temperature while it runs. A cabinet that is cold and running constantly is usually working hard for a reason you can fix; one that is running and warm is a different page.

    Diagnostic visit

    We find out what is actually wrong before anybody quotes a part. On a GE that starts with the two things their own support pages start with — what the appliance is reporting, and whether anything outside it is the cause — because a dryer that will not dry is usually a vent and a dishwasher that will not drain is often a disposer. The fee is credited toward the work when you go ahead.

    Appliance maintenance

    The visit that prevents the expensive one. Condenser coils in a city where floors carry dust and hair, a dryer vent that has been quietly filling for three years, an ice machine scaling on hard water, filters that are past their interval. None of it is glamorous and all of it is cheaper than what it prevents.

    Appliance installation

    Installation done so the appliance can be serviced later, and so it performs the way its specification says. A built-in that has no clearance loses cooling every August, a dryer vented into a long horizontal run never dries in one cycle, and a dishwasher connected to a new disposer with the plug still in it will hold water from the first cycle.

    Refrigerator not cooling repair

    The most common call on this make, and the one most often misdiagnosed as a sealed system. GE's own troubleshooting runs settings, then airflow, then defrost — and it is right in that order far more often than the phone call suggests. A cabinet that gets slowly warmer over days while the freezer stays fine is a defrost story, not a compressor one.

    Defrost system repair

    The circuit that keeps the evaporator clear, and the reason a refrigerator in this climate works harder than one anywhere dry. A heater, a thermostat or a control that has stopped cycling lets ice build where the air has to pass, and the cabinet loses its cold slowly enough that nobody catches it for a week.

    Icemaker repair

    The icemaker inside a refrigerator, which is a different appliance from a standalone ice machine and a different repair. GE's own list runs temperature, water supply, then the shut-off arm before the module — and each of those is cheaper than the assembly everybody expects to buy.

    Water and ice dispenser repair

    Dribbling water, no water, crushed ice only, or a dispenser that leaks onto the floor. GE has a separate support article for each of those because they have different causes, and the one that catches people out is a partly frozen line in the door — which gets worse in cool weather and reads like a failing valve.

    Door seal replacement

    The cheapest repair on a cold appliance and the one that costs the most when it is ignored. In a climate this wet, a seal that has lost its grip lets humid air in all day; the defrost system then spends its life clearing ice it should never have had to make, and the power bill climbs before anybody looks at the door.

    Condenser and airflow service

    GE's own first answer for a unit that is not cold enough, and it is right often enough to be worth doing before anything else. A condenser at floor level in a Miami kitchen collects what floors collect, and a coil that cannot shed heat makes the compressor run longer for less cold — which reads as a failing appliance and is not one.

    Temperature sensor replacement

    A drifted sensor is the failure that makes an appliance look far sicker than it is: a cabinet that never arrives, an oven fifty degrees out, a wine center that swings. The part is inexpensive and the diagnosis is a measurement — which is why it is worth ruling in before anybody quotes a control board.

    Sealed system repair

    Compressor, condenser, evaporator, drier and the tubing between them — the refrigerant circuit. Licensed work with recovery equipment, and the most over-diagnosed repair on a cold appliance in this city. Everything cheaper is ruled out first, and if the arithmetic favors replacing the appliance we say so before the work rather than after it.

    Water filter and line service

    The smallest job on this list and the one that prevents a run of others. On South Florida water a filter reaches the end of its useful life before the six-month interval does, and a starved water path produces slow dispensing, hollow cubes and an icemaker that looks like it is failing.

    Ice machine cleaning and descaling

    The cheapest service here and the one that prevents the most expensive. Scale is what ends ice machines in South Florida: mineral builds on the evaporator, ice takes longer to form and release, and the machine halves its output over a year without ever stopping. The maker's six-month interval is optimistic on this water.

    Control board replacement

    The part most often blamed and least often measured. A control board is real and it does fail, but a sensor, a relay, a connector or a supply problem produces the same behavior for a tenth of the money — so this page exists as much to say when the board is not the answer as to price it when it is.

What GE actually builds here

Four door layouts and a built-in range, sold under four names that share most of their engineering: GE, GE Profile, Café and Hotpoint. The difference between them is usually the door, the finish and the control, not the refrigeration. That matters for a repair, because a part that is discontinued under one badge is often current under another.

What South Florida does to a refrigerator

Humidity is the whole story. A door seal that has lost its grip lets wet air into a cabinet all day, and the defrost system spends its life clearing ice it should never have had to make. That is why a failing seal here shows up as frost, a running compressor and a rising power bill long before anybody notices the door itself. Condensers in this city also fill faster than any manual assumes.

The three that come up most

The icemaker and its water supply. The defrost circuit. And the doors — seal, alignment, or the switch that tells the cabinet a door is open. None of the three is a sealed system repair, and all three get quoted as one somewhere in this city every week.

What we do before we quote anything

Read the temperatures the appliance is actually holding rather than the ones on the display, check the airflow and the seal, and look at the defrost circuit. Sealed system work is licensed, expensive and rare, and it is the last thing on the list rather than the first.

Before you book

Questions about GE refrigerators

It is running but it is not cold enough. Where does that usually end up?

Start where GE's own troubleshooting starts, because it is right more often than it sounds: the temperature setting, then the airflow. Their recommended settings are 37°F in the fresh food compartment and 0°F in the freezer, and a cabinet loaded to the back wall or a vent blocked by a cereal box will miss both while the compressor runs perfectly. After that it is the defrost circuit — a heater or a thermostat that has stopped clearing the evaporator — which presents as a fridge that slowly gets warmer over days while the freezer stays fine. The sealed system is real and it is last.

The icemaker stopped. Is that a whole new icemaker?

Usually not. GE's own list runs temperature first, then water supply, then the shut-off arm, and each of those is cheaper than the assembly. Ice production depends on freezer temperature, so an icemaker that slowed down is often a freezer that drifted up. A saddle valve that has silted closed is a Miami classic. We replace the module when the module is what failed, and we can tell you which it is on the visit.

How much ice should it actually make? Mine seems slow.

GE publishes this, and it surprises people: their crescent cubes measure about 2½ inches long by ¾ high and ¾ thick, and production rates differ by cabinet style. A great many icemaker calls end with the machine working to specification and the household having grown. It is worth knowing before you pay anybody, and we will tell you on the phone if that is what it sounds like.

Water dispenses slowly, or dribbles and stops.

Filter first — GE's interval is six months and South Florida water is not kind to that number — then the water line, then the valve. A dribble that gets worse in winter is usually a partially frozen line in the door rather than a pump or a valve, and that is a different repair with a different price.
