What goes wrong with it

    Oven not heating

    The most useful sentence a customer can say, because it separates the two circuits immediately. GE has an article for exactly this phrasing. On an electric range it is usually the bake element, the oven sensor or a control relay; on gas it is the igniter far more often than the valve.

    Oven door locked and will not open

    GE documents this specifically, and the first answer is usually patience: the lock will not release until the cavity is below a set temperature, and that can take well over an hour after the cycle ends. If it is cool and still locked, or LOC DOOR is flashing with no clean cycle having run, that is the lock circuit.

    A burner or zone has stopped

    A single zone failing while the others work is good news on price: a failed control normally takes more than one zone with it. On radiant tops it is usually the element or its switch, on gas the electrode or the spark module, and on induction the coil's own electronics.

    Diagnostic visit

    We find out what is actually wrong before anybody quotes a part. On a GE that starts with the two things their own support pages start with — what the appliance is reporting, and whether anything outside it is the cause — because a dryer that will not dry is usually a vent and a dishwasher that will not drain is often a disposer.     The visit that prevents the expensive one. Condenser coils in a city where floors carry dust and hair, a dryer vent that has been quietly filling for three years, an ice machine scaling on hard water, filters that are past their interval. None of it is glamorous and all of it is cheaper than what it prevents.

    Appliance installation

    Installation done so the appliance can be serviced later, and so it performs the way its specification says. A built-in that has no clearance loses cooling every August, a dryer vented into a long horizontal run never dries in one cycle, and a dishwasher connected to a new disposer with the plug still in it will hold water from the first cycle.

    Temperature sensor replacement

    A drifted sensor is the failure that makes an appliance look far sicker than it is: a cabinet that never arrives, an oven fifty degrees out, a wine center that swings. The part is inexpensive and the diagnosis is a measurement — which is why it is worth ruling in before anybody quotes a control board.

    Oven element replacement

    The oven will not heat but the cooktop works — the most useful sentence a customer can say, because it separates the two circuits immediately. On an electric range or wall oven this is usually the bake element, the sensor or the control relay, and GE's own troubleshooting walks the same path.

    Oven temperature calibration and sensor

    It bakes badly, or it is out by fifty degrees. Many GE ovens can be calibrated, which costs nothing at all, and that is what we try before replacing anything. A sensor that has genuinely drifted is an inexpensive part; a control board quoted for a temperature complaint is usually the wrong answer.

    Gas range igniter and burner repair

    GE range igniter replacement is measured with a meter rather than judged by eye: the igniter has to draw enough current to open the safety valve, and a weak one glows beautifully without ever opening it. A gas oven that will not light, or a surface burner that clicks and never catches. The commonest answer on the oven side is an igniter that still glows but no longer draws enough current to open the valve — which is why it looks like it is working and is not.

    Cooktop element and switch repair

    One zone stopped and the rest are fine. On a radiant top that is usually the element or its switch rather than the control — which is good news on price, because a failed control normally takes more than one zone with it.

    Induction cooktop repair

    Induction fails in its electronics rather than in elements, zone by zone, and it protects itself by switching off. A top that cuts out during cooking is usually reporting something — an overheated coil, a blocked vent underneath, or a pan it no longer detects — rather than failing at random.

    Control board replacement

    The part most often blamed and least often measured. A control board is real and it does fail, but a sensor, a relay, a connector or a supply problem produces the same behavior for a tenth of the money — so this page exists as much to say when the board is not the answer as to price it when it is.

About GE ranges

Four fuels, and they fail in different places

An electric range is elements and relays. A gas range is igniters, valves and a spark module. An induction top is a set of coils and their electronics, which fail as an area of the surface rather than as a burner. Dual fuel is both, and the make and model decide which half we bring parts for.

Reading the code table honestly

GE's own page says it cannot list every code for every model past and present, and the codes it does list repeat themselves: several point at the keypanel, two at the oven sensor, two at the control. A page that turns twenty codes into twenty different repairs is padding. What the code narrows down is the circuit, and the measurement on site is what names the part.

Self-clean deserves its own warning

The cycle runs the cavity far hotter than cooking ever does, and it is the most common moment for an ageing element, sensor or lock to give up. If a range is going to fail this year, self-clean is when. On an older appliance before a holiday, that is worth knowing.

An electric range is elements and relays; a gas range is igniters, valves and a spark module; an induction top is coils and their electronics. The make and the fuel decide which parts travel with us, which is why the model number shortens the whole job.

What self-clean does to an ageing range

The cycle runs the cavity far hotter than cooking ever does, and it is the moment an ageing element, sensor, lock motor or relay is most likely to give up. That is why an oven that has behaved for years fails the week before a holiday. On an older appliance, running the cycle well in advance — or cleaning by hand — is the cheaper decision.

On an electric range it is usually the bake element, the oven sensor or the control relay; GE's own article walks the same path. On a gas range it is the igniter far more often than the valve — an igniter that glows but no longer draws enough current will never open the gas.

There is an F code on the display. What do they mean?

GE publishes the table, and the honest summary is that it is shorter than it looks: F0, F1, F6 and F7 all point at the keypanel; F3 and F4 are both the oven sensor; F5 and F8 are the electronic control; F9 and FC are the door lock circuit. So four codes are one conversation and not four. Tell us the code and the model and we can usually name the part before the visit.

That one is not a repair. GE's table says it plainly: power is applied but the appliance has been wired incorrectly. It needs an electrician or the installer who connected it, and the range will work normally once the wiring is right.
